The Shambhala Buddhist Path

In order to provide an environment in which Buddhism can flourish in the West, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche presented the spiritual journey in the cultural context of Shambhala - a personal and social vision of awakening that is accessible to everyone, all the time, even in the midst of busy daily life.

The Shambhala Buddhist path of practice and study consists of classical teachings of the Kagyü and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the Shambhala wisdom presented by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Both Shambhala Training and the Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies provide graduated paths of instruction in the profound vision of this lineage.

The path begins and continues with the practice of meditation.  Beginning meditation instruction is offered at every Wednesday night open house or by taking Shambhala Training Level One.  Introductory and foundational classes are offered as preparation for more extensive studies in Shambhala Buddhism.  Shambhala Training levels through Warrior Assembly and Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies classes prepare the student for eventual attendance at Shambhala Seminaries. All along, there are numerous opportunities for deepening and strengthening meditation practice, through intensive practice and study weekends to month-long meditation retreats.

While it is possible, depending on one’s inspiration, dedication to practice, and personal means, to complete all the Shambhala Training levels through Warrior Assembly and much of the Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies curriculum in as little as two years, a more typical journey will take three to seven years from beginning a regular meditation practice to attending Warrior Assembly and the Sutrayana and Vajrayana Seminaries.  The Shambhala Buddhist path after the seminaries is best viewed as a way of life, one with a fundamental orientation towards ongoing practice, study and service rather than a fixed goal to be achieved.  Whatever your personal goals or aspirations, you are welcome to join us for any or all of this journey, or simply to come meditate with us.
