This unique class series, based on Acharya Susan Chapman's The Five Keys to Mindful Communication, will explore the principles of Contemplative Psychology. Using simple methods and metaphors, participants learn to identify toxic conversation patterns and explore what to do when "the same old strategies" leave us anxious, angry, fearful or demoralized. The workshop includes short talks, dialogues, Mudra Space Awareness exercises and mindfulness meditation. The material is based on the Five Buddha Family principles, but presents them in a manner specific to the difficulties of communication. Because our relationship with communication is through our five senses, the series includes Mudra Space Awareness, an experiential set of body-mind meditations designed by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
Susan Chapman, MA, LMFT is a family therapist who has been practicing and teaching mindfulness meditation in the Shambhala lineage for over 35 years. She‘s worked with domestic violence prevention, with prisoners, and held a private counseling practice. In 2002, after having completed the three year retreat at Gampo Abbey, she spent six years as the leader of the next retreat.
Gregory Heffron MFA learned the mind-body meditation technique of Mudra Space Awareness from teacher Craig Smith. In 2007, they taught this practice to senior dancers at Julliard College of the Arts in New York City. With a background in creative writing and the arts, he is a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and lives in Bellingham, Washington.
