Medicine Buddha and the Five Healing Wisdoms
This course is open to all.
Part One—Healing from the Inside Out
We all have a wisdom within known as Buddha Nature. This nature can manifest as a fundamental healing force known as Medicine Buddha, that shines through any illness or problem we will ever face in life. This helps us clear the deep causes of illness and problems so that we can have a good human life and progress to enlightenment.
Here we will explore a view of the Buddhist cosmology, the history of Medicine Buddha as a person and a practice with mantra and visualization, and we will practice together. This practice can be dedicated to helping self or others.
Part One takes place in person at the Vancouver Shambhala Centre
Part Two—The Inside Story,
The Five Wisdoms in the heart of Medicine Buddha, ourselves, and all healing
The five wisdoms appear throughout the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and correlate with five basic modes of all experience. They also support healing in five basic ways. We will practice holding those wisdoms in our heart, just as Medicine Buddha does, and using those wisdoms to support our healing process and our life. Everything we encounter in life can be medicine.
Part Two takes place via Zoom, once each week for five weeks. It is best to practice Medicine Buddha on a regular basis while working with these energies.
*Medicine Buddha works with but does not replace ordinary health care.
Jim Sacamano has been studying, practicing and teaching Medicine Buddha, and the Five Buddha Wisdoms, for nearly 50 years. In 1969, he met his primary teacher, The Venerable Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He attended Rinpoche's first Vajradhatu Seminary in 1973 and then spent one year in residential study of the Five Wisdoms at the Maitri Therapeutic Community in Wingdale, New York. A medical doctor, he initially practiced family and emergency medicine and later moved into the study and practice of psychiatry and psychotherapy.
